Hair Loss Cure?
What is “PRP” Platelet Rich Plasma?
Hair Loss Cure? Produced in just minutes from a small quantity of your own blood, PRP contains a concentrated mixture of the body’s own natural growth factors and circulating adult stem cells which have been shown to play a key role in tissue regeneration and stimulating hair regrowth. Once activated, platelets release their stores of powerful growth factors and other healing molecules responsible for tissue repair as well as stem cell recruitment and activation. PRP has been successfully used for well over a decade in many areas of medicine such as orthopedics, oral maxillofacial surgery, cosmetic surgery, sports medicine and more as a safe, effective, non-chemical, non-pharmaceutical alternative to surgery.
How is PRP used as a stand-alone treatment for hair loss?
Performed in about one hour in the office, PRP is often called a ‘lunchtime treatment’ for hair loss. PRP may be combined with Extracellular Matrix (ECM) products in an attempt to further enhance the hair growth response and provide a longer duration of results.
How is PRP Hair Regrowth performed and what is the downtime?
PRP is a non-invasive, non-drug, in-office hair regrowth treatment that takes less than one hour. Once a small sample of blood is obtained, the physician-supervised preparation procedure concentrates platelets by separating them from other blood components under sterile conditions using special equipment. Under local anesthesia, the PRP is painlessly applied in the desired area followed by microtrauma using an advanced motorized microneedling device and then a low level laser therapy treatment for optimal platelet activation. Afterwards, aside from some temporary skin redness, there are no signs the procedure has been performed. Patients may shampoo their hair immediately afterwards and there are NO activity restrictions.
What are “growth factors?”
Platelets contain your own natural powerful protein molecules called growth factors that normally begin tissue repair and regeneration at a wound site. These platelet-derived growth factors initiate connective tissue healing, skin regeneration and repair, promote development of new blood vessels, stimulate the wound healing process as well as modulate hair growth. Some of the important growth factors and other components found in PRP include Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), Transforming Growth Factors (TGF-3 and TGF-a), Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2), lnterleukin-i Beta (IL-113), Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs), hFOBs (Human Fetal Osteoblasts), circulating adult stem cells and more.
What are the risks of a PRP Hair Growth treatment?
Because PRP is sterilely made from your own blood, it is insulated against the risk of disease transmission. The need for pain medication after PRP treatment is rare because the procedure is performed using local anesthesia.
With hair loss, does PRP cure or regrow ‘new‘ hair follicles?
Unfortunately, no. However, PRP helps reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will produce longer, thicker, healthier hair fibers. In severely depleted hair loss areas, a hair transplant may be your best option. This may be the only way to to increase the number of hair follicles.
When can I expect to see results from a PRP hair growth treatment and are repeat treatments required?
Everyone responds differently. However, HairCheck measurements usually begin to increase within eight weeks and it may take six to twelve months to appreciate visual improvements from a PRP treatment. When PRP treatments include certain types of Extracellular Matrix and adjunctive treatments, the results may last for up to two years before a repeat treatment is necessary.
What is the cost of PRP Hair Regrowth?
PRP treatments that include advanced Extracellular Matrix products like ACell-Matristem or BioD-Amniogenix can be performed as a stand-alone therapy. A medical hair loss evaluation is required before scheduling a procedure because not all patients are candidates for PRP treatment.
