Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is the most effective, non-invasive skin resurfacing process available. Utilizing a specially designed handpiece, micro-particles, or a diamond-tipped wand, to slough off the top layer (epidermis) of your skin and stimulate new skin growth.  The fresh skin just below the surface is then exposed, creating a glowing new complexion.  This technique also helps to stimulate collagen, which results in a younger looking complexion.  There is almost no discomfort with microdermabrasion, meaning you won’t need a topical or local anesthetic and there is no recovery or downtime.

Microdermabrasion can be effective in reducing the appearance of:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Fine Lines and Winkles
  • Acne Scars
  • Blending Post-Laser areas
  • Sun Damage
  • Uneven Skin Tones
  • Enlarged Pores
  • Age Spots

Results will be noticeable from the first treatment, however a full treatment protocol is 5-8 treatments with one treatment every 10-14 days and maintenance visits every 2-3 months thereafter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Microdermabrasion involve?

Once your skin is cleansed, the hand held device is used in a specific pattern on areas of your face to facilitate the exfoliation process.  The hand piece also has a vacuum mechanism to remove skin debris throughout the service.

Where is Microdermabrasion performed?

This service is performed in Medical Spas, Spas, Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologist offices by board certified estheticians and medical technicians.  At A Medical Spa at Rizzieri, our board certified estheticians perform this service in our comfortable and relaxing treatment rooms, under the supervision of Dr. Donna Wilcox.

How much time does the treatment take?

A typical Microdermabrasion face treatment takes 20-30 minutes.  A longer service time may be required for additional areas of the body such as the neck or decollete.

How many treatments are required?

Most specialists recommend 6-10 treatments for best results.  A consultation with one of our board certified skin care specialists will determine your best course of action for maximum results.

Will I experience discomfort during the treatment?

Microdermabrasion is painless.  You may feel a slight scratching sensation in sensitive areas around the eyes or nose, however, most patients report no discomfort at all.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for Microdermabrasion?

One of the advantages of this service is minimal pre-service requirements.  You may need to discontinue aspirin based medicines, Retin-A type products or glycolic acid products for a few days prior to your service.  Sunbathing and waxing should be avoided as well.  A consultation by our board certified skin care specialists will help you determine what steps you should take before your Microdermabrasion sessions.

Is there anyone who should not get Microdermabrasion?

It is not recommended for those who suffer from keratosis, individuals with undiagnosed lesions, active rosacea or acne, diabetes, eczema, psoriasis or lupus.  Recent laser surgery or Accutane acne treatment may be a contraindication.  Discuss your medical history with your skin care specialist to determine if this treatment is right for you.

What can’t Microdermabrasion do?

It can not reverse severe scarring or deeply pitted and spotted areas of this skin.  Microdermabrasion works strictly at the surface of your skin and can not reconstruct the epidermis like laser treatments can.  It can not remove tattoos, make darker pigmented areas disappear or treat severe burn scars.
